In the previous article, we talked about six important things that everyone needs to know about the Financial risk Manager course and subsequent examinations.
However, there are still a lot of questions to be asked, such as: Where do I find study material? How soon will I know my results after doing the test? And so on.
That is why, we have decided to write this article covering some additional things that everyone has to know before registering for this course.
We hope that this article will be useful to you and that it’ll answer any lingering questions (or doubts) that you may have.
Study materials for Part I
Let’s first get this out of the way. In addition to using other source material, it is highly recommended that you study from the official books.
The relevant content is approved and published by the Global Association of Risk Professionals every year and they contain the most pertinent information, such as curriculum updates and similar aspects.
The official book for Part I is divided into four sections: Foundations of Risk Management, Quantitative Analysis, Financial Markets, Risk Models and Valuation.
Naturally, you may be familiar with some topics more than others, due to your previous experience and educational exposure.
That’s why everyone can customize their study plan due to their needs and their work experience. If you need more information about any section, you can use our very own website and plan accordingly for every topic.
Study materials for Part II
If you want to successfully do Part II, you have to be familiar with all tools that are mentioned in the official books for this area.
We want to emphasize this because many people take a pause between attempting both tests, which can sometimes last a year or two (sometimes more).
Now, there’s nothing wrong with having a break, but if that is your case, it may be a good idea to first revise study materials for Part I, and only then start preparing for Part II.
Again, there are official books sanctioned by GARP each year and you should keep up-to-date with them.
It’s not mandatory to purchase their books if you don’t want to, but it’s the most relevant source of information as it gets updated every year.
How to get the books
If you want to study using the official books, you can purchase them on the GARP website. All you have to do is create an account by signing in with your email address and creating a password.
It’s possible to order Part I or Part II separately, or you can order them at the same time.
Remember that the price of the materials may vary each year, plus the shipping costs that is associated according to your region. The shipping time can also vary, depending on your country and some other factors.
However, on average, most books are shipped within one to two weeks from ordering them, and it’s also possible to send an email if you need to get the book sooner than it was expected.
Are there any online materials?
If you don’t want to wait until the books get shipped or you prefer to study using online materials, you may be wondering whether it’s possible to find study online options.
The good news is that the official books are also available in the form of an e-book. You can order them from their website, and, unlike the paper books, you’ll immediately get access to them.
Using older materials
We understand that you may have access to older material and may be planning to study with them.
Here’s this thing. The content actually changes slightly change every year. And while the changes are almost never dramatic, you do run the risk of studying incorrect or wrong material.
It’s also possible that you may skip something important that could lead to not passing the exam you’ve been preparing for.
We know that this is an additional cost, but why not just do it right and get it out of the way?
When are the results?
Now, when you know everything about the test, the next logical question is: when will I know whether I have passed or not?
From what we have seen, the governing body makes it a priority to always deliver results in a timely manner. In this case, it means you’ll receive your results in approximately 6 weeks from your test date.
This timing is due to the high number of candidates who are taking the exam all around the world as well as time needed for quality assurance.
You’ll receive your results by email, and if you don’t receive this after the 6th week, we recommend you do a follow-up, just to check whether there was a mistake regarding your email address.
The email will not only contain the information of your score and whether you’ve passed or not, but it will inform you of the next steps, depending on your circumstances.
The official governing body takes into consideration the fact that candidates are situated in different countries and continents.
As such, they have provided various payment methods, and you can choose the one that is most convenient for you.
First, you could pay online using your standard credit card. As for now, you can pay with your Visa, Master Card, or Amex card, although they might add other options in the future.
The second option is to pay using a check. GARP accepts all US checks, and they also accept some foreign ones, but they need to have a US intermediate wire.
If you’re not sure, it may be a good idea to contact them and see what is available to you.
Finally, you can also pay by wire transfer, but bear in mind that there will be a processing fee. (You will find all payment instructions on your invoice).
